Another of our BRSM alumnus has passed away. On May 11, Pepper Anne died from lymphoma. She had been in her forever home for less than two years, but she was loved and cared for until the end. Her "mom" writes, She was a tough, brave little girl, but the lymphoma and chemotherapy just wore her out. Scott had been deployed to Iraq and just came home a couple of weeks ago. I really believe she was hanging on to make sure he got home safe and that I would be okay."
Those of us a Beagle Maryland remember Pepper Anne as an exceptionally sweet little dog. Her "mom" continued, "Now I am sure she is chasing all the squirrels and rabbits she could wish for."

Anna and Andrew Charles (who's family adopted Hunter from us oh so long ago) read of Misia's plight on the website and promptly gathered up their friends. Together they sold lemonade to raise funds to help pay for Misia's veterinary care. They generously donated all proceeds to the beagles!
Thank you, Anna , Andrew & Your Wonderful Friends!!!

Ben (right) is howling with happiness!
A very generous Donovan Sachs donated a goodly portion of the money he received
for his 9th birthday toward the care of our beagles! It was thoughtful,
generous, and unselfish. We are very proud of Donovan and the dogs are
grateful, too!

In this space where we would
normally ask you for money for a
sick or injured dog...or prayers
for a an ailing pet, just this once...(don't
blink!) just this one time, we bring you a
good giggle.

These would be the beagles of one of
our volunteers...Sue...
who was inspired to name this photo "Optimal
Use of a Chair."

3/29/08 Daisy (and her human parents) need your prayers! Daisy Calvert has been diagnosed with a large (really large) tumor on her spleen. Her vet and family are trying to decide whether or not to risk surgery given her heart problems. Daisy was a country breeding dog who was "set free" in the dead of winter when her owner was done with her. She was saved by a good Samaritan neighbor and made her way to Beagle Rescue. Daisy entered rescue with a mammary tumor that was so huge that it dragged on the ground. She survived (nay, thrived) after having her tumors removed and has spent the last several years as one of the few senior spoiled beagles living indoors with a great mom and dad.

WE ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF FOSTER HOMES!!

This is Dolly Levy. She has been rescued and she has
found her forever home, but
for every great dog we have found a home for, we get urgent requests to
help many,
many more who come from horrible circumstances. All of our dogs are in
private
foster homes. We are at full capacity right now and need new foster homes.
If you
might be interested in fostering, please e-mail us at foster@beaglemaryland.org.

Just a Little Shameless Self Promotion
You know, this rescuing business is a tough one. Every single day we receive requests from shelters pleading with us to take in perfectly lovely, lovable, healthy and not-so-healthy beagles, and because we operate at peak capacity 100% of the time (that's no exaggeration), we can't say "Please send them to us" very often. It breaks our hearts. When we do place a dog in a loving home, we are grateful to the the new "owner," and joyful for the dog. Occasionally we receive a letter such as this one. It is from Hugo Boss's new dad:
"In September I moved to Maryland from Chicago. It was a
tough adjustment as I had only a few weeks to move and get my affairs in order.
In October I decided to get myself a companion. I went to PetFinder.com and
searched for a dachshund. One of the first entries was for a 28lb, 3-year old
beagle-doxi mix named Hugo Boss. I have to admit, I wasn't looking for a beagle
as I had never owned one before, I grew up with dachshunds, but what caught my
eye was the name, Hugo Boss; so I clicked on the picture and there he was. Hugo
Boss, one of the most oddly proportioned dogs I have ever seen... yet he seemed
to have a very original cuteness about him. I immediately went to the
beaglemaryland.com website to read on about Hugo. There were more pics and a
bio. The pics showed that he was a very handsome beagle with a very good
disposition, but he had been in foster for 6 months. That made me wonder, "why?"
When I finally got to see Hugo at the PAWS pet walk and spend some time with
him, it turned out he was used to test other dogs temperaments because of his
overwhelming good disposition, and had a very loving foster family. The team at
Beagle Maryland filled me in on the breed and what to expect should I decide to
get Hugo. After my first walk with him, I fell in love and picked him up the
following Friday, October 11th (my birthday coincidentally). Hugo turned out to
be the best b-day gift I have ever received. Within two weeks he was completely
house-trained, within a month he was able to go off leash in enclosed areas, and
turned out, "yes" Hugo was very good with other dogs, children, strangers,
cats...everyone. He truly is the most obedient, friendliest and loving dogs I
have ever had the pleasure of having.
It is a testament to Beagle Maryland, their volunteers and fosters, who took in
Hugo and fought for him to avoid being euthanized. The folks there know the
breed, know how to work with strays and provide a great atmosphere for someone
to let the dog of their dreams find them.
Thanks to all at Beagle Maryland, especially Ewa, for your help, time, and
rescuing Hugo, the best looking, friendliest dog in Maryland and truly the
greatest companion a fella could ask for.
Happy New Year from Patrick, Martha, and Hugo"

Thank you, Patrick! You have not only made one of our orphans a very happy boy, his adoption has opened the door for another to come into rescue.
