"Special Needs" Beagles

A dog can be considered "special needs" for physical or emotional reasons.

A dog who has an illness or medical condition is an example of a MEDICAL SPECIAL NEEDS dog. This can be as simple as a dog who needs a pill once or twice a day or a special hypoallergenic diet. Sometimes it's a more serious illness that needs monitoring and support. When we rescue a dog, we work very hard to meet the dog's needs. If you're a person who wonders, "What can I do to help a dog?" --- you may be an excellent candidate for this sort of beagle.

A dog who is profoundly shy is an example of an EMOTIONAL SPECIAL NEEDS dog. Usually this is a dog who was not handled as a pup, or who was owned by a human who didn't take time to work with him/her. The best home for this sort of dog is an all-adult home that is relatively quiet. Not a recommended challenge for human social butterflies or people looking for an "instant dog!" Shy beagles benefit most from a calm, supportive environment and lots of patience.
