This page is dedicated to our Morgan Fund dogs (those with special or ongoing vetting needs). It's essentially a journal of those beagles who've come into BRSM in need of extensive or specialized care, and the vetting that has gone into stabilizing their health and improving their quality of life. (To see the first installation of our Morgan Fund dog journal, click here!)

Have you ever thought, "Well, BRSM must have a lot of money if it saves old sick dogs?" The reality: BRSM doesn't have a lot a money! We are an all-volunteer NPO with no kennel, no vet staff, no salaries, no overhead. What we do have is a network of dedicated volunteers who spend their money, time, and effort to get these dogs the veterinary help and in-home support they need. We rely on donations from people like you who are willing to spend their hard-earned money to help save the beagles.

And every dollar helps! Thank you for all of your donations, big and small (and no donation is too small) --- your generosity continues to help these wonderful hounds!

August 2010:

Grady is grateful for your prayers!

Grady

Your prayers have worked! After a weekend at the emergency vet and some time in an oxygen chamber (all probably triggered by a respiratory virus on top of Grady's heart condition), Grady is home and has begun to actually play with the other dogs. His foster mom feels that he will just keep getting better every day. He will be on antibiotics for several more weeks, and will require another chest x-ray to confirm the pneumonia is gone, but he is acting like he feels well.    As hoped, he is back to his old tricks. Grady's foster parents have expressed gratitude for the interest and support that has been shown to them. It meant a lot to them to know that others care!

April 2010: On top of the careful vetting that all of our dogs receive upon entering rescue, Bunny had several abscessed teeth. She had eleven removed. Here's Bunny:

We've also had many heartworm-positive beagles come into rescue lately, including Louisa, Petie R., Regan Charles, Lucky Griggs, Tyler Charles:

Alex (R. Alexander) has a grade 5 (out of 6) heart murmur.  He needed to have an echocardiogram in order to properly diagnose and choose the best medication to help him. Here's R. Alexander:

February 2010:  Chance Mann came to us with with a badly dislocated hip.  Because the injury was left untreated until he came into rescue, what could have been a quick fix turned into surger. This happy little guy is recovering, but his bills are pending. Here's Chance:

ChanceMann.jpg

Tommy Tinker came with what was supposed to be a broken leg....turns out he has multiple fractures to his pelvis and a severely broken leg requiring surgery.  He's also heartworm positive and must undergo treatment.  He has had his surgery and needs prayers that his recovery will go smoothly for him and that we can raise money to pay the vet. Here's Tommy:

Alison Krauss has sarcoptic mange and is being kenneled awaiting a foster home. This is Alison:

Bailey Putnam is being treated for a skin condition that caused him incessant itching, as well as a serious ear infection. Not only are his meds expensive, the contagious nature of his skin condition necessitated his being boarded until he was no longer contagious.  Just sprung from the vet, he is delighted to find himself out of isolation, but leaves a whale of a vet bill in his wake.  Here's Bailey:

Ivy is a nine-year-old beagle.  A few weeks ago, her foster mom noticed she was limping pretty badly, so she took her to the vet to see if her previous Lyme Disease had come back.  The doctor said it seemed to be something worse than that, so he wanted me to see a specialist. Click here to read the rest of Ivy's story.

November 2009: Biffle King William came to us in March of this year. He was extremely thin and had an injured front left paw. At least we thought it was injured. After much vetting and suffering on his part, it was determined that his leg would not heal because there was a cancerous lesion. In short order, Biffle's leg was amputated to his shoulder.

His gait is awkward, but his spirit and enthusiasm for life is undiminished. Biffle is a joy. He is young, happy, exuberant, friendly and just crazy about his life on this old earth. This is Biffle:

September 2009: Francie Baltimore (named for St. Francis) came to  us via Baltimore City shelter with a serious cut to her face.  Her snout was re-attached Sunday morning. She is doing very well.

Morgan Le Fay came to us because she is heartworm positive and has a mammary tumor.

March 2009:

Meet Aladdin!

Aladdin.jpg

Aladdin’s story is repeated over and over and over. We at BRSM see many “Aladdins” – throwaway dogs who can only dream of a better life. We try to make some of those dreams come true, but we can’t do it without your help!

There really is an Aladdin – a diminutive beagle who is now being cared for at an animal hospital in rural Virginia. He was going to come to us on a transport, but is too sick and weak right now. This is his story – a story that, in truth, could belong to any one of the beagles in our care. We will keep you posted about Aladdin’s progress. In the meantime, please read Aladdin's Story. And please, your donations are critical to his care and all of our dogs.

If you still want to read more about life as a beagle, see Dudley's Note to Aladdin, otherwise known as Beagle Rescue Orientation 101. That Dudley!  He's such a thoughtful guy!

Ruby Rose just came to us in late February 2009. She arrived pregnant and

sick --- and not just any sickness: she is anemic, has Erlychia, heartworm, and

an upper respiratory infection. One can only imagine her misery while on her

own looking for food and a warm, dry place to sleep. Ruby was too weak to

carry her pups to term. She is now warm, dry and well-fed in her foster home,

but we are  (as usual) in need of funds to pay for her vetting.

We also just acquired Biffle (leg hold trap injury) and Abigail King William, Darby O'Gill, and Mackenzie (all heartworm-positive).

We are completely dependant on the generosity of the public.  If you can contribute to our veterinary fund, we (and the dogs) would be most grateful.  Thank you for your generosity!

Biffle’s foster mom found a crumpled piece of paper under his pillow. It appears that Biffle is a very special hound – the poet laureate, the bard, the troubadour of all hounds! We expect him to continue letting loose his “poet within” and we hope to find new unpublished work by this exceptional boy. Who knows, maybe it will get him a scholarship to a leading university and he will be invited to read his work at some future inauguration. In the meantime, the many hounds at BRSM will have founded a background chorus . . .

Biffle’s Song

(as it would have been recorded by the Soggy Bottom Boys
if they weren't a completely ficticious group)

I was runnin’ down the trail
Nose to ground and waggin’ tail,
Wind was playin’ with my ear
Oh, I felt so cavalier!
Ahoo! The huntin’ hound blues….

I was told I had to hunt
Run ahead way up front,
Find the foxes and the deer
That’s to sum up my career!
Ahoo! The huntin’ hound blues….

But I have a gentle soul,
In the park I’d rather stroll,
Get a rub under the chin
Just let live the poet within!
Ahoo! The huntin’ hound blues….

Words and Music (if there were any) by Biffle King William

August 2007: We need your help! BRSM dogs have suffered a rash of emergency vet visits lately, the latest being Emma and Jane, who suffered a severe reaction to their heartworm medication and Meredith who was bitten by a copperhead snake (the cost of her care and the anti-venom was over $2,000). As you may have guessed, this has put a serious crimp in our finances. If you can and would like to donate money to BRSM, now is the time to do it! You can donate via PayPal by clicking on the icon below, or by old fashioned check made payable to Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland and mailed to P.O. Box 983, Waldorf, MD  20604. Lest you forget, we are a non-profit (that's an understatement!) with 501c3 status; meaning donations are tax deductible.

Bently's Story

This is Bentley....

Bentley After Surgery

Update 8/04/07:  Bentley has recovered very nicely from his last surgery. He has one more hurdle (his final heartworm treatment) and then he'll be ready for his forever home!  Prayers still needed but he appears to be making great progress!

Update 7/18/07:  Today Bentley underwent another big surgery --- hopefully his last. The doctor removed the remainder of his leg up to the shoulder and cleaned out a large infected area.  The good news is that Bentley came through with flying colors and was even wagging his tail when his foster mom left for home. The doctor predicts that with time and good care, Bentley should recover fully. It has been a very long road for this little boy. Please continue to pray for his recovery and thank you very much for caring about this little dog.  Soon he will be able to live a good life.

Update 7/17/07:  Bentley has been home with his fostering mom and he is doing fine. The surgeon wanted to wait another week before doing the second surgery.  Bentley went back to the vet tonight and his surgery will be on tomorrow. Everyone say prayers, please!  He is doing wonderfully so far.

Update 7/16/07:  Bentley has been home with his foster mom for almost a week now.  The surgeon wanted him to have another week to recuperate from the first heartworm treatment before the second amputation surgery. Bentley is doing fine. He will be dropped at the vet tomorrow night and his second (and we hope final) surgery will be this Wednesday, the 18th. Prayers are needed. He's doing well and we want that to continue!

Update 7/6/07:  "Hi everyone! I wish someone would break me out of my cell, I feel like I am in jail.  At least my foster mom comes to visit everyday with yummy treats. The say I have to stay here until my next surgery. I am doing as well as can be expected, and sure do miss being at my foster home even though I wasn't there very long.. I really don't have too much more news right now, but I hope to have some good news in the near future to share. I bid you all a good night, and I am going to rest now, seems that is all I can do. Good night, hugs and kisses to all!"

Update 7/4/2007: "Hi, it's Bentley. I have been in the hospital for a couple of days  my pain was really bad and I wasn't breathing well. The doctors are keeping my pain under control and my breathing is better. When my foster mom came to visit with yummy treats, she noticed I had broken a stitch and my amputation wound was open. This was apparently caused by an infection even though I was on antibiotics. Now they say I will have to have another operation to amputate more of my leg up to the shoulder. The special bone doctor  wants to do this next Wednesday. Everyone says if I can get through this, I will be as good as new. I also have heartworms and have started my heartworm treatment. This is also another obstacle that I will overcome. I am getting sleepy. Good night for now."

Bentley is only nine to twelve months old and has already seen too much trouble in his young life. We would really like to pull him through all this. Please keep him in your prayers. Also, any donations you may wish to make will defray the cost of his surgeries and hospital stays. Your continued generosity is greatly appreciated.

Update 7/2/2007: Bentley had a setback today. He had to go to the ER because he was in respiratory distress. The heartworms are affecting his heart. Through it all, he still is managing to wag his tail. He is again in the hospital. Let's pray that he gets a break and that he can fight a little longer.

Update 7/1/2007: Bentley came home to his foster home today. He was eating up the rubs and pets but is in for the long haul. He will need to rest, rest, rest. He needs to continue fighting. Keep up your prayers.

Update 6/29/2007: A BRSM volunteer visited Bentley. He looked tired and very, very small in his cage. Today he took a short walk and ate. He's being closely monitored and is on antibiotics and  fluids. The vet is happy with his progress even though he is still very ill  and not yet out of the woods. Thanks to the vet and his staff for their wonderful care.  Bentley is putting up a good fight. Please continue to keep him in your prayers.

Update 6/8/2007: Bentley's leg was amputated today. He is a fairly sick little boy. He's nine months to one year old and already has a serious case of heartworm disease with an enlarged heart. His lungs don't sound good and he's lost a lot of blood in the last month so he's anemic. Sometimes its not easy to know what is best to do. After much discussion we decided to give him a chance at life. Prayers are Needed!

Bentley Before Surgery

6/27/2007:  Bentley is a young fellow, friendly, outgoing and a regular tail-wagger. Unfortunately, he has a problem --- he had a serious injury to his front left leg and the people who found him decided to home vet him, without the help of a professional vet, for a month. When things went wrong he was turned in to the local shelter. Now he needs to have his leg amputated.

February 2007: This Spring, Ralph, Katerina, Natasha, Phoebe, Trooper, Scute, and Daisy Minor are all being treated for heartworm. Luckily, there is a treatment, but it is costly and takes many weeks to complete. This Valentine's Day, won't you consider making a donation to help Ralph and his friends get the treatment that they need?

January 2007: This is Tesla. She was a very scared little adult female tri-colored beagle who had a hernia the size of a baseball (probably due to over breeding).  It was repaired and we thought all was well.  A second hernia became visible after the first operation and again, Tesla underwent surgery.  Cost of surgery, approximately $800.

Prudence has a similar story.  Wonderful dog, wanting so much to please, but acting as if afraid she will be abused.  We could see she had a grapefruit sized tumor, and we were preparing to have it removed when we discovered her teeth were in terrible condition.  She had a critical dental procedure, lost 12 teeth and took antibiotics for the infection in her mouth.  We also discovered she had two hernias.  After waiting several weeks to make sure she got over the infection in her mouth, we had the hernias repaired.  At present, she is recovering.  Cost of Prudence’s surgeries is approximately $1,100. Can you help with the cost of caring for these ladies?

Helen is a very special beagle.  She came to Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland not only blind, but with advanced heartworm disease.  Defying the odds, Miss Helen overcame her disease and has found a very happy home.  This is a wonderful ending for us and an even better beginning for Helen.  And it's why we do the work we do. To all who contributed to her veterinary bills and offered prayers in her behalf, we are deeply grateful.  We think you'll agree, she was worth the effort!

March 2006: Gizmo was recently treated for heartworm disease and is now at the vet in very serious condition as little Gizmo tries to combat the heartworm disease. Prayers for Gizmo's recovery are desperately needed. Gizmo is a sweet, loving little beagle and is only three years old --- so young with so much life left to have to battle this dreaded disease. The vet is hopeful that a blood transfusion will aid in her recovery, but right now the situation is hour by hour as to her recovery. Please keep Gizmo in your thoughts and prayers tonight.

This is Gizmo  Gizmo.jpg

In addition to thoughts and prayers for Gizmo, please add Poppy to your list! The vet thinks Poppy has pneumonia.  Poppy is currently at the vet being treated with IV fluids and antibiotics.

This is Poppy Poppy.jpg

BRSM is very committed to helping dogs such as Gizmo and Poppy in their time of need, and we try to provide all help possible to save the beagles and give them a chance at normal life.  Your donations, help make this possible for the little ones.

Please consider our Irish beagle/dachsund, Danny Boy.  He has a thyroid condition and takes medicine every day for it. He is a happy, loving, little rotund fellow who would love his own home. Danny would be happiest in a home with another smaller dog. Danny is eligible to be a Friend of Winston .  This is Danny:

February 2006

Update 2/27/06:  Ginger stable and coming home tonight. Excellent news! Ginger has advanced heart disease and will be taking one day at a time . . . we are very happy that Ginger will have a few more good days!

Update 2/25/06: Prayers are needed for Ginger (formerly Ginger Fred). Ginger was diagnosed a year and half ago with serious heart disease. She's been on meds and seeing a cardiologist ever since. Last night her mom Judy returned home from work to find Ginger gasping for breath. Ginger was rushed to the emergency vet, and today was transferred to her cardiologist. This morning Ginger was stable but in very serious condition. Ginger is the nicest dog and we wish the best for her. This is Ginger:

Update 2/25/06: Lily is up and about and hungry . . . being hungry is always a good sign for a beagle.

Lily.jpg

December 2005: Nelly Bly in bad shape due to advanced heartworm disease and her age (12 years).  She is going to start her treatment on December 19th.  We need to raise around $800 to cover Nelly's treatment/x-rays/blood work.  When Nelly has completed her treatment (end of January/February) she will be ready to go to a forever home.  She is also eligible to be a Friend of Winston

NellyBly.jpg   Nelly Bly

This is Helen. She is four or five  years old, spayed, loving, calm, great with dogs, cats and kids. She is also blind in both eyes and suffering from advanced heartworm disease. Helen came to be in the care of BRSM by a series of coincidences. We think she deserves a chance. Helen needs your prayers and we need your donations. We think Helen's vetting will cost around $1000.

We are trying to raise $1800 to help pay for heartworm treatment for six of our current dogs. Judy Dee, Salem, Luke, Charity, Nugget, and Pistachio have tested heartworm-positive. These are great dogs who will be looking for their forever homes shortly.  Look at these faces and see if you don't agree they are worth helping.

BRSM frequently takes in dumped/abandoned dogs who are in desperate need of extensive vetting. We feel that these dogs are just as deserving of a chance for a decent life and try not to leave them behind simply because of their vetting needs. Without BRSM, these dogs would have been euthanized because of the expense of treating their various needs. Many dogs that we bring into rescue are heartworm-positive. Heartworm disease is easily prevented, but the treatment is costly, time-consuming, and difficult for the dogs involved. We desperately need your help to treat the heartworm-positive dogs and others as well. Please consider making a tax deductible donation to help these poor little guys get the treatment they need to live a normal, long, happy and healthy life. As always, the BRSM beagles appreciate your help and support!
