Abby Update 12/17/09:  (from her foster mom)

Abigail is doing great. She hasn't shown any reactions (coughing, lethargy) to the second round of Immiticiden (heartworm treatment), and she's been her lovey, goofy, and increasingly sociable self.

She walks well on a leash now, she's pretty confident about meeting new dogs and people at the dog park, and she's also more confident about meeting strangers at home (she used to hide in another room and peek around the corner; now she comes forward to check them out, and warms up pretty quickly). She's been playing with toys on her own and sometimes with the other beagles, and she even howls and barks when excited (huge improvement --- when she first came home with us, her only vocalization was growling in her sleep).

We think she would definitely do best as the "baby" in her forever home, and ideally have another friendly dog to pack with --- she does okay on her own, but definitely prefers to have pack-mates to take her lead from.

We think she'll be ready to start attending adoption days in January (2010). She's not due for her next heartworm check until March, but I think it would be very unlikely that she'd need more injections. Her heart and lung function are very good, and I guess as long as a potential adopter would be sympathetic with her treatment history and be vigilant about giving her preventative meds, that would be fine.

Abigail, is a sweet, gentle-natured dog.   She is a little shy, but is people bonded and does very well with non-aggressive dogs.  She would be happiest in a quiet non-roughhousing home.  She is not crated and prefers to be baby gated into a room with a window and a dog bed while her human is gone to work.  Abby is playful like a puppy with the other dogs.

She had recently had a litter of puppies, all of whom were adopted, but sweet Abby was left behind.  She caught the eye of a BRSM volunteer who just couldn't stand to see this beautiful, friendly little girl put down.

Unfortunately, Abby is Heartworm positive.  (We sound like a broken record, don't we?)  Heartworm treatment is expensive.  WAY more expensive than the preventative!  We need funds to vet her.  If you can contribute any amount to her get-well (veterinary) fund, it would help.
